Boot-time scan allows Avast to detect and remove hard to detect viruses before the operating system starts up.

  • Repair - Remove only malicious code attached to an otherwise safe file; this is not possible for files which are entirely malware.
  • Ask - Avast asks what you want to do with each detected threat.
  • Delete - Permanently remove the file from your computer.
  • No action - No action is taken during the scan; the threat is listed in your scan results and you can decide what to do later.

Go to Scan ▸ Scan for Viruses and select Boot-time scan from the drop-down menu.

Click Start to schedule the scan to run at the next system restart, before the operating system is active.

How to Scan Avast – Step by Step Guide

Select a type for scan

There are several scan types in avast antivirus. I have explained the details of all the types in below-

  1. Smart Scan: This type of scan works to detects outdated software, duplicated, network threats, weak password, malware, low-quality add-on, performance issues etc.
  2. Full Scan for Virus: The scan type is predefined. It completely scans full system such as your device storage, memory etc for viruses.
  3. Targeted Scan: It scans only the folder which you select for the scan to detect malware.
  4. Custom Scan: This type of scan allows you to select custom parameters and work according to your specified parameters.
  5. Boot Time Scan: If you think that your computer has the virus, you can set schedule scan your system using a boot time scan. The scanning process will start when you start the computer. It detects known malware. Then, remove the malware and threats before the operating system start to running. Scanning before the system start helps to remove malware before the attack the system.

Start the Scan

  1. Run avast antivirus and open the user interface. Click on Protection=>Scans.
  2. There are 5 types of scan, Smart Scan, Full Virus Scan, Targeted Scan, boot Time Scan, Custom Scan. Select one of them which you want. (Read the details about scan type from above and decide which one you need.)

You can see the scanning process once it started. Also, when the process will complete you will see the scanning results.

Process the scanning results

While the process will complete, the result data will appears with detected malware. Also, you will get options to resolve them.

If avast antivirus find any issue while scanning, you need to select an option from the drop-down menu to take action with the detected issue.

  1. Auto: It repairs the detected files. If unable to repair, then moves to Virus Chest or delete them permanently.
  2. Delete: Permanently delete the detected files from the computer.
  3. Repair: If the file is infected partially, it deletes malicious code. But, sometimes it’s not possible if the full code is malicious.
  4. Chest: It is avast antivirus recommended option. Send the detected file to the Virus Chest and the virus cannot attack your computer further.
  5. Nothing: Nothing to do with the files. (It is not recommended)
